Renowned Spanish journalist Ignacio Cembrero recently took to « X » (formerly Twitter) to question the sincerity of Morocco’s autonomy proposal for Western Sahara. Cembrero highlighted a sharp contradiction : while Morocco promotes a plan for self-governance, it simultaneously prevents prominent Sahrawi activist Aminatou Haidar from traveling abroad.

Cembrero argued that these ongoing restrictions on freedom of movement undermine Morocco’s political discourse. His critique suggests that if basic liberties are denied today, the promise of future autonomy lacks credibility. This comes at a sensitive time, as international efforts intensify to find a solution to the conflict and reports surface of Sahrawi representatives meeting with U.S. officials—a development that has reportedly caused concern within Moroccan political circles.
